EN 17353 2020 Protective Clothing Enhanced Visibility

EN 17353:2020 “Protective Clothing-Enhanced Visibility Equipment under Medium Risk Conditions” comes into force

 

With the popularity of night running, cycling and road fitness, safety protection equipment suitable for these scenes has gradually become a necessity, and non-professional visual clothing/accessories have begun to receive more and more attention.

Recently, the European Union issued a standard update to EN 17353:2020 "Protective Clothing-Enhanced visibility equipment under medium risk conditions", which has come into effect on the date of issuance.

EN 17353:2020 replaces EN 1150:1999 (protective clothing non-professional visibility clothing)-and EN 13356:2001 (non-professional visibility accessories), and the corresponding technical requirements have been updated and expanded.

The new standard specifies requirements for enhanced visibility equipment, which appears in the form of clothing or devices that can visually highlight the presence of the user. The enhanced visibility equipment is designed to provide the wearer with eye-catching/visibility under medium-risk situations in any daytime and/or under the illumination of vehicle headlights and searchlights.

This standard applies to:

 

Wear in medium-risk situations, such as working with slow-moving vehicles, jogging or cycling on low-speed traffic roads.

This standard does not apply to:

 

• High-risk scenarios, such as the construction industry, firefighting, rescue and other environments;

 

• Head, hands, feet, such as helmets, gloves and shoes;

 

• Active lighting equipment, such as LEDs, etc.;

 

• Low-risk scenarios, for example, the use of visible materials in the design is only for decorative purposes, not to highlight the visibility of users.

The test items involved in this standard are as follows:

 

·       Material performance

 

       Fluorescence and brightness factor

 

       Color fastness

 

       Dimensional stability

 

       Reflective performance

 

 

 

2. Design requirements

 

• The standard puts forward the basic requirements of 360° visibility for all applicable products

 

3. Minimum visible material area requirements (see the table below)

Finally, the following: the products involved in this standard are personal protective equipment, and must be certified by the notified body in accordance with the (EU) PPE Regulation (EU) 2016/425 for Type II PPE product Module B EU type inspection and certification, before they can be sold with the CE mark. If the product is sold to the UK market at the same time, the designated institution needs to conduct UKCA conformity evaluation, and obtain the UKCA certificate before listing.
